Gardening tool for "cutting earth"?

Looking for something similiar to a shovel, except for the sole purpose of "Cutting into the earth" like I large flat sheet of metal you could somehow force into the earth with your feet(like a shovel) to cut roots deep down, cut blocks of clay soil, etc, I was wondering if anyone knew what this tool was called?
